Custom category templates

Say, what’s the best approach to creating custom templates based on category for Anemone? The standard WP instructions (https://codex.wordpress.org/Category_Templates) don’t seem to apply. For example, I created a category-.php template in page-templates, but that category is not seeing that custom template.

UPDATE: looks like I was just placing the custom template in the wrong folder. Put it in the home folder for the theme, and that solved it.
