I’ve purchased the Pro version of the Contango theme and am very happy so far. I’ve customised it a little but haven’t modified the php-files yet as I do not want updates to destroy my site.
This is exactly where my question comes in: is it possible to tweak the content-single.php file a little and not having to worry about future updates destroying my customisations? I want to get rid of the meta data as I have placed it in my sidebar.

Create a Child theme for Contango and do your modifications without worry of future updates. You may get more information about creating child themes.
